The Limited edition stamps were launched on 15 July 2008. Designed as miniature sheets with collectors in mind - the stamps actually form part of a larger picture. The standard stamp features a smiling Mandela in a photo taken by Halden Krog, the international stamp sees the statesman posing elegantly for a portrait by Cyril Coetzee. Only one-million of each were printed. Due to recording breaking sales and demand they were sold out immediately nationally.

The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, widely known as the Order of St John, is a Royal Order of Chivalry, which dates back from the first Crusade in 1099. This was when the first Crusaders entered Jerusalem and a body of Knights started assisting the Blessed Gerard in his hospice, which became the informal foundation of the Order of St John. Pope Paschal II formally recognised the existence of the Order in a papal bull in 1113. It is the only Order of Chivalry still performing the work for which it was originally founded. This was, broadly speaking, to alleviate suffering of all mankind everywhere and to encourage its spiritual growth. Pro Fide - Pro Utilitate Hominum. St John is active in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and nearly fifty other countries. ers have been issued by the Post Office bearing the date 24th June. This particular date is of great significance to the Order of St John as it is traditionally recognised as 'St John the Baptist Day', the patron saint after whom the international non profit organisation takes its name. |
